Nathan Cross

Nathan joined the team recently as Laboratory Scientist specialising in DNA relationship and sexual health testing. Read on to discover why Nathan decided to pursue a career in Science and what attracted him to the role here at Biofortuna.

Hi Nathan, tell us about your role at Biofortuna?

As a Laboratory Scientist, I use a range of techniques to deliver precise DNA relationship and sexual health testing for our NorthGeneTM services. My work includes extracting DNA from diverse sample types such as buccal swabs, cell lines and even bone or tissue samples. I then utilise the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technique to amplify the DNA, enabling detailed analysis through capillary electrophoresis.

Why did you decide to work in Science?

Growing up I was always interested in science, especially biology, and once I pieced together my knowledge across various disciplines at university, from microbiology to biomedical science, I found the challenge very rewarding.

Science is always evolving, and I’m excited to grow and learn alongside it as my career progresses.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I’m enjoying the opportunity to put skills that I learnt at university into practice while providing a service that can make a real difference in people’s lives.

What does a typical day look like for you?

In the laboratory, I routinely carry out DNA extraction, PCR and capillary electrophoresis. Beyond these core techniques, I also handle case registration and sample booking – assigning unique identification numbers to ensure each sample is accurately tracked throughout the process.

Now that I’m confident with these tasks, I’ve started training in writing reports and the analysis of allelic data generated from capillary electrophoresis, expanding my skill set further.

I also enjoy supporting my colleagues whenever possible, whether it’s preparing STI kits for dispatch or assisting the Manufacturing team with packaging assays. I’m always eager to contribute wherever I can.

Why did you choose Biofortuna?

I chose Biofortuna because it is a growing company where I can develop my scientific and professional skills, while providing meaningful results that will have an impact on people’s lives. I also want to take the opportunity to learn from others outside of my department such as business management and sales and marketing to gain a broader perspective and further expand my capabilities.

What do you like to do outside of work?

Over the past five years, fitness has become an integral part of my lifestyle. I was a member of my university’s rowing team. Nowadays, I enjoy unwinding after work by hitting the gym or, more recently, training at a mixed martial arts academy.

Beyond fitness, I’m passionate about live music and exploring new places – I’m excited to island hop around Greece this June.
