Meet

Harry Gorst

Harry is a first-year apprentice and is currently gaining experience in all areas of our operation.
Here he discusses his role and why practical learning at the workplace suits him more than a classroom environment.

Why did you decide to apply for a place on the apprenticeship programme?

I decided to apply for a place on the apprenticeship programme because the opportunity to gain hands on experience in a field I’m genuinely interested in, whilst earning a qualification was too good to pass up on. Especially with Biofortuna who offer such a wide range of services for me to learn about.

What does a typical day look like for you?

A typical day for me involves performing a wide range of operational duties in the laboratory and the across the Company to help the different departments within the Company. These duties include assisting the genomics team with the DNA relationship testing service, helping the manufacturing team with their assay development and carrying out equipment calibration, maintenance, and validation activities with the quality team.

This wide range on duties means I am constantly learning on the job and experiencing what it’s like to have a career in the life sciences industry.

What do you like most about your job?

I like the variation in what I do day-to-day. One day I will be assisting the manufacturing team with bead dispensing, lyophilisation, and kitting and then next I will be performing validation protocols on one of the many pieces of equipment in our purpose-built laboratory.

What do you like to do away from work?

Away from work I like to keep fit by training and competing in several martial arts, where I have won medals and other awards. I also enjoy hiking and camping in nature where I can take in the scenery of Wales.

Would you recommend an apprenticeship to your friends?

Yes, I would absolutely recommend an apprenticeship to my friends. The opportunity to learn and work hands on in a real company, especially one as innovative as Biofortuna, instead of learning from a classroom  is second to none. I would recommend everyone wanting to start their career in any industry to look for an apprenticeship.
