Meet

Andrew Mulvihill

Andrew joined us as Quality Manager in February 2022.

Here he discusses his role, why he joined Biofortuna and what motivated him to pursue a career in Quality Assurance.

Please describe your role as Quality Manager?

I provide day to day management of the Quality Management System at Biofortuna. Ensuring quality compliance with all applicable standards and regulations and customer expectations.

Why did you decide to work in Quality Assurance?

I’ve always jokingly said after many years working in laboratories, that I wanted my own desk and computer to sit at.

The more I did within Quality Assurance in the labs, the more I was drawn to the compliance and continuous improvement activities rather than the day-to-day lab work. I started with root cause investigations and being trained in internal audits. The more senior I became, I was finding I was doing less traditional lab work and the more compliance activities were presented to me. It felt like a natural progression to transfer to Quality Assurance.

Why did you choose Biofortuna?

That’s quite a simple question to answer. It wasn’t until the actual interview that I decided that Biofortuna was the company that I wanted to work for.

It was a big change in what I was used to, working in a predominately Good Manufacturing Practice environment, moving across to a company that had a diverse portfolio of activities accredited to both ISO13485:2016 and ISO17025:2017. I wasn’t sure in what to expect.

However, it was in the interview, speaking to the CEO and COO (The Nicks), that made me truly want to work at Biofortuna. The vision and the passion I experienced in speaking to them was truly the deciding factor in me choosing the role at Biofortuna.

The opportunities for me to grow in the role and for me to influence the quality culture at the Company with the backing of like-minded senior leaders was quite the driver.

I don’t think I’ve ever looked back and the move to the way of ISO accreditation working has been a good one.

What does a typical day look like for you?

It’s varied yet familiar. With Biofortuna maintaining accreditation to ISO13485:2016 and ISO17025:2017 it can be a hat swapping role to meet the needs of the different ISO standards. Overall, I’d like to say quality is quality and I do have to deliver the activities that everyone relates to the quality department. But I could be hosting audits, leading root cause investigations, training quality related projects or answering the multitude of questions I get posed regularly about compliance and all things quality.

What do you like most about your job?

The overall influence of quality culture I have and that there are very few barriers to continuous improvement at Biofortuna. There is a positive drive to be the very best in the fields that we work in.

What do you like to do away from work?

I am a very keen beginner in the sport of Recurve Archery. I started about 2 years ago, and I am finding it both very exhilarating and very soothing at the same time. I honestly wish I could have started sooner.

I also like watching movies, especially old ones. Ealing comedies and war films. I’m also one of the first (or so I think) few generations that got into video games. I enjoy playing them, especially the more retro games. There’s quite a retro theme going on here if I do say so.
