Jak Manser

Jak joined us as a Senior Project Scientist in April this year.

Here he describes his typical day and what he enjoys most about his role.

Please describe your role as a Senior Project Scientist

My role at Biofortuna is to help develop our customers’ technologies in preparation for commercial scale up. Working with the other members of the Manufacturing and Development team, we move from initial feasibility assays right the way through to full-scale automated manufacturing.

Why did you decide to work in science?

I’ve always been interested in science for as long as I can remember. I think I get my natural curiosity and passion for learning from my Dad and Grandad, as they were both super passionate about their own hobbies (nature, space, history etc.). I love the satisfaction of problem-solving and making processes more efficient, which is something I have recently started to work on with the team here at Biofortuna.

Why did you choose Biofortuna?

I was hugely impressed with the depth of development work that Biofortuna performs for their customers and the wide range of applications of their respective technologies. The laboratory space here is fantastic and will help us to deliver the Company’s growth plans, which are also very exciting!

What does a typical day look like for you?

My days are split between the laboratory and the office, working on, and managing, the project work for our customers. Recently I’ve been culturing some UTI-relevant pathogens for use in a LAMP assay – utilising my background as a microbiologist!

What do you like most about your job?

I love the team at Biofortuna. Everyone is incredibly supportive and we’re constantly bouncing new ideas off each other to make it a great place to work! Each of our customers’ technologies are unique, so there’s plenty to learn and lots of challenges to work on!

What do you like to do away from work?

I really enjoy cooking, especially on the barbecue when the weather is nice. Recently though, the majority of my free time has been spent doing a lot of very amateur DIY and decorating in my house!
