Hi, I’m Andrew Ball, Facilities and Procurement Manager here at Biofortuna, and I’m here to talk about ISO 14001.

ISO 14001 is the international standard for Environmental Management Systems. It provides a framework for organisations to design, implement and maintain an environmental management system to help them control their ecological impact and continuously improve their sustainable performance.

Helping our customers manage their environmental impact has always been a big part of what we do here. We are a major provider of lyophilisation services, a process that removes the need for cold chain logistics to transport and store diagnostic assays. As part of this process, we have a humidity control system. This has been retrofitted to extract the heat generated and use it to offset our energy consumption by 30% every time we use it.

But we are going much further than that. We have set ourselves a target to become Net zero by 2030 and we are implementing a range of initiatives to achieve it.

We have installed a 100Kw solar panel system on our roof to reduce the environmental impact of our own manufacturing, generating 72,500kWh over the last 12 months.

And Voltage Optimisation lessens our energy consumption by 8% and our CO2 emissions by 12,000kgs whilst maintaining our building’s efficiency.

We have also partnered with a local waste management company, Bromborough Plastics Ltd, to ensure as much of our plastics consumption is recycled as possible.

And we have created a garden behind our laboratories to give our team a space to break out and relax while promoting biodiversity.

But this is just the start. We are proud of what we have achieved so far but have many more initiatives planned over the coming year.
