Lyophilised reagent beads are customisable spheres containing an accurately measured single dose of formulation.

Offering all of the stabilisation, transportation and storage benefits of traditional lyophilisation, beads present a range of additional benefits designed to increase manufacturing throughput, simplify handling, reduce contamination risk, and increase operational efficiency.

Benefits of lyophilised beads include:

Faster reconstitution – lyophilised beads offer the best ratio of volume to surface area.
Reduced risk of contaminationwith no central stock to corrupt, the risk of contamination is greatly reduced (compared to pipetting from a vial for example).
More reproducible results – single dose reagent originating from the same batch minimises variability between tests.
Extended shelf life – because beads are sealed individually each bead is only exposed to ambient air for a very short time, reducing the risk of water absorption. As there is no central stock, the remaining beads remain sealed, preserving shelf life and reducing wastage.
Increased throughput and lower cost  –particularly with Point of care platforms where the use of beads allows the reagent to be lyophilised before insertion into the device.

The future of Point of care testing

Point of care testing offers the accuracy of laboratory based testing but delivers results in minutes or hours rather than days.

Lyophilising the molecular and enzymatic reagents within Point of care devices is challenging, traditionally requiring them to be dispensed within the device and then lyophilising in-situ.  However this requires a freeze-drying capacity significantly larger than necessary, simply to accommodate the volume of cartridges.

Beads provide a perfect solution for lyophilising reagents for use in Point of care platforms. A single accurate dose of the reagent is lyophilised in a durable sphere which can then be sub-assembled into cartridges at a later stage in the manufacturing process.

This provides a far more efficient and cost-effective use of freeze-drying capacity, resulting in a throughput uplift of up to 1000 times the volumes achieved by lyophilising in-situ
