Thanos has been with us for around 18 months in the role of Senior Scientist. Read on to find why he embarked on his chosen career, what he likes about working for Biofortuna and how his young family keep him busy away from work.

Describe your role and what you do.

I am a Senior Development Scientist at Biofortuna. In layman’s terms, I am the person responsible for transferring a customer’s project into our facilities and optimising it for scale up and manufacturing.

 

Why did you decide to become a scientist?

I can’t really remember! I think everyone is born a scientist. When we are kids we keep asking Why and How all the time. And that’s the basis of all scientific thinking. Some of us just stick with it. From a young age I was fascinated by “life” and a question that was always lingering in my mind was how can anything be “alive”?  In high school, I could see that the answer was lying in the field of Biology. Progressing to college I knew the answer was in Genetics and Molecular Biology. And that’s the path I followed throughout my degrees.

 

And what brought you to the UK?

I studied for my BSc here in the UK and immediately felt at ease with the culture and the people. However, after finishing my Msc in Greece and getting some years of work experience I quickly realised that I wasn’t on the career pathway I would want for the rest of my life. Greece, being a small country, has very limited resources and only a small number of available posts requiring a scientific background. It was such an easy decision for me to move back to UK and pursue the career I had always dreamt of.

Why did you decide to join Biofortuna?

It was during the height of the COVID pandemic and I was looking to move away from academia and join the private sector.  Biofortuna, at the time, was seeking an experienced scientist that closely matched my qualifications and background. After researching the company, I could see that Biofortuna were one of those companies that were rising to the challenge of the pandemic and were adapting and expanding their vision to match the new circumstances. As a scientist, I just couldn’t let this opportunity pass me by and not be part of this effort. Luckily , the management team at Biofortuna decided we shared a lot of common values and invited me to to join the team.

 

What excites you about the future of diagnostic testing?

The COVID pandemic brought a lot of pain and distress. But, it also provided an opportunity for the diagnostics sector. It allowed the general public to see the importance of our work. We showed how fast we can move and progress when we collaborate. And most importantly, how we can “fit” the science and knowledge accumulated over decades to new technologies such as Point of Care testing.  I love being part of that.

What do you like to do away from work?

Family life is taking much of my free personal time. However, music is one of my other passions and I do run my own indie record label specialising in a niche market. When I need to relax (and find some quiet at home) I usually grab a book; mainly science fiction or the classics.

 

And finally, would you recommend Biofortuna as a place to work, and if so, why?

Yes, definitely. Everyone at Biofortuna is  part of a culture of “change”. We are growing as a company and contributing the constantly changing face of diagnostic testing. And that’s a good thing in my book, you don’t want to sit and watch the world go by. At Biofortuna, you don’t just do a job, you are a valued colleague, and in time you will become a friend. Also our state-of-the-art laboratories at our new facility in Deeside are a (big) cherry on top of the cake.
